Why Mechanical Engineering Internships Are Hard to Find Online

ยท Finch Team

If you've searched GitHub for mechanical engineering internships, you've probably noticed the lists aren't built for you. SimplifyJobs' Summer 2027 list, the biggest one, sorts its roles into software engineering, product management, data science and AI, quantitative finance, and hardware engineering. There's no mechanical section.

Here's what Finch's public job board showed for mechanical engineering, and what that number means.

How many are open

As of October 9, 2026, Finch's board had 40 open US internships and new-grad roles whose titles match mechanical engineering.

That small number doesn't mean nobody hires mechanical engineers. Mechanical roles lean on companies' own job boards. 18 of the 40 came straight from a company's job board, compared with 413 of the 2,622 roles across our whole board. Read the 40 as what our board found, not as every mechanical role out there.

Our title match also counts test and integration roles, and some of those ask for electrical or computer engineering instead, so 40 includes some roles that aren't mechanical. For today's numbers, see Finch's mechanical engineering page. The live page counts every role whose title matches and updates with each release, so its totals and companies differ from this hand-checked October 9 snapshot.

Who has open roles

These are the companies with more than one open mechanical engineering role, after we checked each of those roles by hand:

CompanyOpen US roles for ME
Anduril Industries2
Arc Boat Company2
Base Power2
Formlabs2
Graymatter Robotics2
Muon Space2
SharkNinja2

L3Harris Technologies and Northrop Grumman dropped off this table after the hand check. L3Harris's matches are integration and test roles that ask for electrical, computer or systems engineering or computer science, and Northrop's two are one test engineering posting listed under two titles.

What the roles look like

A few that were open on company job boards when we counted:

  • SharkNinja: Summer 2027 Mechanical Engineering Intern and Spring 2027 Mechanical Engineering Co-op (Needham, MA), posted October 8
  • Syska Hennessy Group: Mechanical Engineering Summer Intern (Hamilton, NJ), posted October 8
  • Arc Boat Company: Mechanical Engineering Intern, Powertrain and Recreational (Torrance, CA), posted October 5 and 7
  • Field AI: Mechanical Engineer Internship, Robotics Hardware (Boston), posted October 6
  • Anduril Industries: 2027 Quality & Test Engineer Intern and Winter 2027 Quality & Test Engineer Co-op, posted October 5
  • Graymatter Robotics: Mechanical Design Intern (Los Angeles), posted October 5
  • Muon Space: Environmental Test Engineering Intern, Summer 2027 (San Jose, CA), posted October 3

Many mechanical roles never say "mechanical" in the title. They're called test, reliability, quality or thermal engineering roles instead, so search for those words too.

If you need visa sponsorship

Some defense and space roles, like Anduril's here, are open only to U.S. persons, so read each posting before you count on sponsorship.

Here's how many H-1B labor condition applications (LCAs) the U.S. Department of Labor certified in fiscal year 2025 (October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025) for the companies in the table and list above that we've matched in that data:

CompanyCertified H-1B LCAs, FY2025
SharkNinja39
Formlabs20
Field AI8
Arc Boat Company7
Base Power4
Muon Space1

An LCA is a step before an H-1B petition, not an approved visa. These counts cover every kind of job at the company, not just mechanical engineering roles or internships. We haven't matched Anduril Industries or Syska Hennessy Group in that data yet, which doesn't mean they file none. Source: Department of Labor, Office of Foreign Labor Certification, LCA disclosure data for FY2025. Many of these companies have their own page on Finch, under companies hiring students, with their open roles and filings.

Where else to look

Since mechanical roles lean on companies' own job boards, more of your search has to happen where they're posted:

  • Company career pages. Make a list of 20 to 30 companies in the industries you want (manufacturing, energy, aerospace, robotics, consumer products), and check their job pages every week or two.
  • Your school's career fairs and engineering society events, where employers recruit in person.
  • Co-ops. Two of the roles above, SharkNinja's spring co-op and Anduril's winter co-op, run outside the usual summer window, so don't filter them out.

If you'd rather not check yourself, Finch picks 3 roles for your major every week, mechanical engineering included, and says why each one fits. It's free, and you can start with mechanical engineering.

How we counted: open roles on Finch's public job board as of October 9, 2026, US locations only, whose titles match mechanical engineering by the same rule as Finch's list for your major; one role per company and title. Sponsorship counts are FY2025 certified H-1B LCAs from the Department of Labor, matched to company names by Finch. SimplifyJobs' list categories checked on October 9, 2026.
